History

Haarby Bio was built in 1922 by Hans Bøgner with 150 seats. During the silent film era, accordion music was played behind the stage curtain, and Mrs. Bøgner ensured peace and order in the auditorium.

The cinema burned down in 1947 but was rebuilt with a foyer and first floor. In the 1960s, Cinemascope was introduced, and the cinema gained new owners. After another fire in 1981, the auditorium was rebuilt once again, and in 1986 it received 114 new seats.

In 1997, the cinema was close to bankruptcy but was saved by dedicated volunteers who have operated it ever since. In the late 1990s, the sound system and equipment were modernised.

The digitalisation in 2011 marked a new beginning: With support from foundations, Haarby Bio reopened in 2012 as a digital cinema. In 2013, the auditorium was completely renovated with 75 comfortable seats, a sloping floor, and a new foyer.

In 2022, Haarby celebrated 100 years with its own cinema.
