The history of Jordbassinerne

From 1884 to 2006 the Assens Sugar Factory produced sugar from sugar beets. On the beets sat large amounts of soil that had to be washed off before they could be used in production. The soil was deposited on the area southwest of the factory.

Before 1884 the area was a flat beach meadow only ½ m above sea level. In the years before the factory’s closure in 2006, soil was deposited each year in quantities enough to fill 10 Olympic swimming pools. And over the more than 120 years the roughly 40 ha area was raised so that today it lies 10 metres above sea level.
