VisitAssens
Start at VisitAssens and follow Søndre Ringvej for 1.4 km. Turn ➡ onto Thorø Huse Vej and continue for 1.5 km. Shortly after entering Thorø, turn ➡ onto Jacob Gades Vej. Follow the road for 300 metres, then turn ➡ onto Drejet towards the Community Hall.
Thorø Community Hall
There are toilets and picnic tables here. Park your bicycle and walk across the small bridge to Thorø.
Thorø
Today, Thorø is owned by the Copenhagen Municipal Teachers' Association, which purchased the island from businessman Harald Plum, also known as the "Goulash Baron". Several school camp buildings are located on the island. Behind the football field on the left is a lovely sandy beach. At the fork in the road, turn ⬅ to walk clockwise around the island.
Vestborg
Along the way you will reach Vestborg, which was intended to become a museum of maritime history and trade. Here you can see a round building inspired by Copenhagen's Round Tower, although it was never completed. On the northernmost point stands a large granite cross erected by Harald Plum. Please note that this area is closed during the bird breeding season.
Return via Saltofte
If you prefer a longer return route, head back to Saltoftevej and turn ➡. Ahead is a long hill with a beautiful viewpoint and a bench at the top. Follow Saltoftevej for 2.2 km to Saltofte Community Hall and turn ⬅ onto Lerbjergvej.
Saltofte Beach (optional detour)
From Saltofte, you can turn ➡ onto Å Strandvej. There is a playground and picnic tables here. After approximately 1 km, a sign points to Saltofte Beach, a lovely sandy beach with picnic tables and toilets.
Kærum Church
If you choose the longest route, continue along Lerbjergvej to Fåborgvej, where you turn ➡ and shortly afterwards ⬅ onto Kærumvej. Kærum Church is situated high in the landscape and differs from most village churches by standing alone rather than in a village. On the exterior you can admire the beautiful Romanesque arches, which have never been whitewashed. Near the entrance are old gravestones showing the occupations of the deceased. Toilets are available at the parish office.
End of the route
From Lerbjergvej – or after visiting Kærum Church – follow Egebjergvej towards Assens. Turn ⬅ onto Dalvænget and then ⬅ before Harald Nyborg onto Stejlebjergvej. Turn ➡ and follow Søndre Ringvej ⬅ back to VisitAssens.
